There’s been plenty of exchange between the worlds of deeper dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass over the last few years, with producers like Instra:mental, Icicle and ASC regularly switching between the two to devastating effect. Holland’s Gijs Snik, also known as Proxima, the latest signing to Tempa, is no exception. His tracks blend the best aspects of both genres, retaining the edgy moods of drum ‘n’ bass whilst channeling dubstep’s interest in the physically overwhelming properties of sub-bass.

Having started out producing rough-edged, densely percussive drum ‘n’ bass tracks, for his first ever solo release Proxima has dropped the tempo and upped the space. The result is a pair of subtly aggressive dubstep rollers that combine the warmer, altogether dubbier tones of genre greats like Digital Mystikz with drum ‘n’ bass’s ceaseless forward drive. ‘Formal Junction’ is stark and metallic, all grinding robot chatter, constantly shifting percussive patterns and the occasional glimmer of melody. ‘Grunge’ on the flip is even more pared away, breaks in its rolling conga driven rhythm lent extra dread by sci-fi vocal samples.

With his tracks becoming staples in scene figurehead Youngsta’s legendary DJ sets and Rinse FM shows, Proxima is swiftly becoming a name to watch in dubstep circles. His deep and deadly take on the more minimal side of the genre ramps up the pressure to near breaking point.

Though the number of producers making vital-sounding dubstep may have slimmed, both tracks offer evidence that there’s still a great deal of power within the genre, locked away and just waiting to be tapped.

1. So how did it all begin? When did you first get into producing?
..hmm first of all ..my life is all about art.. except music

i also draw/paint make all kind of arts basicly i just have the feeling about art

the music production thing started i think in about 2 years ago .. on FL studio

and i was inspired by the dubstep cuz its so original and gives you the freedom to do

bassicly whatever you want .. it doesnt have some strict rules or anything (for me)..

thats it basicly … im still on FL tho .. FL 10 atm ..just wiv the time i got better

and better and learned so much stuff ..about the sounds , audio itself etc .. that i didnt

know back then that i will learn em .. but im very happy for myself ..i still got a lot to

learn but people already really likin my tunes buy you know we people learn all the time

2. Who would you say your main influences are?

back in the day the tunes that grabbed my attention do dubstep (first dubstep tunes i heard)

were … Orien – Look At my eyes , Plastician – Vio-lent ..and some others

but the main influence i think are Jakes , Skream , Coki … cuz they all have such a style

they are original and unique …

3. Tell us about your next release?

Next release … hmm im gonna release some stuff on Betafarm/betamorph + I got some big things forthcoming on Dubstar !

4. Are there any colabs in the pipeline?

Im doing a collab wiv The Strangers right now … i really like their tunes ..so

i think wiv both our styles is gonna be a nice little collab

5.Who is your favourite producer and who would you like to collaborate with?

i got many favourite producers btw … maybe i wanna collab with MuK atm also with Kromestar , jakes , coki hope this one day will happen tho .

6. Where can we catch you performing in 2012?

at this moment i cant tell you much … but this year at the end of it i think

im gonna play in Belgium

7.What are your 3 top tunes of the moment?

MuK – no hats no trainers (original) + the D2 Remix of it ! .. the third one i think is .. Requake – Coochy Coochy song big one !

8.What up coming artists would you recommend?

The Strangers , Riddlez , Saule , Trom , Squalid Squad

9. Any advice for up and coming artists?

hmm .. be sure if the music is your thing … if its true ..then it will all happen !

10.Tell us something random about yourself?

i use FL 10 and i make music :D:D lol

Flash and crafty Dubstep rollers from the OG scene don. ‘Boookey’ lays out a HD-criss hybrid of synth’d-out Hip Hop and staggered skank rhythms reminding of his previous collaborations with Om Unit. Flipside ‘Alone’ edges closer to Broken Beat territory with tilted martial snares and darkly tinted, wavey synths for that dope late night effect.

A really confident, coherent debut album from Author, the duo of Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin. Dubstep is virtually an old man now, and yet you could count the number of memorable LPs the genre’s thrown up on one hand. Author’s effort attempts to redress this, offering up 10 tracks that are club-strength, but rich and musical enough to work as home listening too. The only real vocal track is the opener, ‘Turn’, with Ed Thomas’s croon set to Kuedo-esque synth waterfalls, rudeboy subs and an unreconstructed halfstep skank. Horns, on the other hand, are a surprisingly prominent component to Author’s sound: with its woozy reggae parps and slouchy beat ‘Green & Blue’ is likely to become a fixture of Bristol bars and bake-outs for years to come, while ‘Sun’ bravely – and successfully – attempts to marry wistful jazz trumpet to a dubstep framework. The second half of the album toughens up and heads straight for the heart of the dance: ‘Mothership’ seems custom-built to fit into Pinch’s Subloaded sets, while ‘Fix’ is a high-octane, syncopated house bombs. An ambitious and well-judged album this, one which deserves to find a wide audience outside of the West Country basshead scene.
